three departments in film
You have three main people running all other departments on a film set. Or, I should say, managing over each department head. Those people are, the Producer, the Director, and the Cinematographer (also known as the director of photography) The Producer of a film coordinates, supervises and controls all matters such as; hiring the rest of the crew, getting the money for the film, setting up the locations and all equipment needed. They are usually the ones that set up or seek out the distribution of the film. The Director of a film is responsible for overseeing the creative aspects of the film, telling the story and putting what is one paper onto film. The director controls the story of the film, selecting locations, setting up the camera angles, and of coarse getting the best performance out of the actors. The Cinematographer is in charge of creating the look and feel of the film that the director wants. Ultimately, he is truely the one putting the story on film as he controls all aspects of the camera and directs the grip and electric crews so he/she may get the look the director is going for. These three people control or give approval to everyone else on the film set to bring the production together. Also, depending on the roles, some Producers take a more creative approach, often referred to as a creative producer to where they share in how the story is told. likewise, some directors with more established careers sometimes take on some of the producing roles during a film. Cinematographers will often make recommendations on crew they like to work with and will also work with the director on developing the look of the film, again depending on experience and project, the Cinematographer may be given more freedom and creative control. Sometimes the roles on a set can be blurred or having several people wearing several hats. Sometimes the lines are firmly drawn. There are a lot of factors, including budget, experience of the people involved, and if its one persons passion piece. |
